HISTORY OF THE “AMIS & FRIENDS DU SANT ANDREU JAZZ BAND”
The Facebook group "AMIS & FRIENDS DU SANT ANDREU JAZZ BAND" was created by Jean-Yves Cordier in 2017. Jean Yves was born in 1935 to parents who had been passionate about jazz since their teenage years in the 1920s. He therefore heard jazz from the cradle, and it's part of his DNA. He has heard and loved jazz all his life. He also practiced it as an amateur trombonist. But he was also passionate about Brazilian music long before the birth of bossa-nova. When she appeared in the late 1950s, he immediately felt her marriage to jazz was evident.
So he practiced this new music, which brought him to Rio where he spent twenty wonderful years.
Back in France in 2000 at the age of 65, he occupied his retirement in front of his computer, researching in Brazilian, French and American blogs, everything that could feed his musical passions.
It wasn't until 2010 that he stumbled upon a YouTube video that featured very young jazz musicians. Surprised and impressed by the quality of their interpretation, he started looking for other videos. ; He found very few, but he tried to get information about this group of young people.
In 2012 the videos became more numerous, he managed to know the name of the organizer of this "Sant Andreu Jazz Band" of Barcelona, a certain Joan Chamorro. He then assiduously followed the progress of his project on the internet, his YouTube site and his personal site.
He was amazed that very few jazz-related people, musicians and amateurs, knew about the wonderful young people and their leading teacher.
He decided in 2017 to do his best to publicize the project of Joan Chamorro and his young musicians.
For this purpose he created on Facebook the group of "Amis du Sant Andreu Jazz Band" which today (08/2023) has 6000 members (50% from Latin countries, Europe and America and 50% for the rest of the world).
In 2018, he was in contact with great fans of the SAJB, Swedish, Danish and American who in turn created an English site: "Friends of Sant Andreu Jazz Band"
In 2021, Alberto Batista, a native of Barcelona 71 years ago, but having left his native Catalonia at the age of one, discovers the Sant Andreu Jazz Band on YouTube, and goes to the 8th Jazzing Festival and the 4th Jazz Education Stage of Sant Andreu. It is a wonder. An amateur jazz drummer for almost 40 years in his adopted South-West, he has the chance to participate in jams that he is not ready to forget, with Scott Hamilton, Joan Chamorro, Dena Derose and the young Koldo Munné on alto sax playing Cherokee on the one hand and with Marta on trumpet playing Misty on the other.
It was shortly after that Jean Yves Cordier asked him to Co-administer the Facebook group "Amis du Sant Andreu Jazz Band". Alberto created the website of the group "Amis Du Sant Andreu Jazz Band" which became "Amis & Friends Du Sant Andreu Jazz Band" by merging with the friends of the English-speaking group.
The Facebook group "Friends of Sant Andreu Jazz Band" was created in March 2020 by three passionate fans of the group: Garry Berman from the United States, Bengt-Ove Boström from Sweden and Bo Sybrandt Hansen from Denmark, who were united in their love. of the group and their ambition to disseminate their knowledge on this subject.
When Bengt-Ove and Garry each discovered the SAJB, they both began writing articles about different aspects of the group. In one of Bengt-Ove's first articles, he interviewed the founder and leader of SAJB, Joan Chamorro, who strongly advised him to come to Barcelona to see the band at the Palau de la Música on November 28, 2018. What he did
In Barcelona, Bengt-Ove met Bo in person for the first time, together with another Finnish SAJB fan, Pertti Haikonen. However, they had already been in contact since Bo discovered Bengt-Ove's SAJB items.
The lucky next step was that American Garry Berman found the SAJB when he saw a video of Andrea Motis on YouTube and, fascinated, started researching and writing about the group. His ambition was to make SAJB known across the ocean to the United States. His posts of SAJB videos on his own Facebook page garnered little interest from his friends, much to his frustration. But Garry's writing was probably just as recognized in Europe as it was in the United States by – among many others – Bo Sybrandt and Bengt-Ove Boström. Garry's ambition later became an important part of FOSAJB's idea - to make SAJB known in English.
Bo and Bengt-Ove each sent rave responses to Garry for his first article, and from there the three began a joint discussion about how best to promote knowledge about Joan Chamorro and the SAJB.
Bengt-Ove participated in the strategic discussion and the start of the Facebook group, then he returned to his other tasks. From then on, Garry and Bo became the administrators of the group, which grew to 3,000 members in its first six months alone.
FOSAJB is now a very active Facebook group with nearly 9,000 members around the world, who share videos (old and new) of SAJB performing, as well as those of former members who have since continued their professional music careers. .
Garry and Bo finally met in person at Jazzing Fest 2022, where they enjoyed talking with other SAJB "super-fans", conducting interviews and presenting Joan Chamorro with a certificate of appreciation, signed by many many SAJB enthusiasts, for its creation and its continuation. project leadership.
Much to the sadness of many, Bo Sybrandt Hansen passed away suddenly in November 2022. The group is now administered by Garry Berman.
